On Tuesday, October 2, 2012, from 4 to 5 p.m. the Minneola Schoolhouse Library will take part in Jumpstart’s annual “Read for the Record.” All children in first grade, second grade and third grade are invited to join staff at the library and be counted. The numbers will be added to those across the country attending read aloud gatherings held this fall. This year’s book is the New York Times Bestseller Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad by David Soman and Jacky Davis.
The program at the Minneola Library is more than joining together to read out loud. Children will get a chance to do some of the fun things that the Bug Squad kids do on their play date described in Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad. Before reading the book, each child can make a mask of the bug of their choice – a ladybug, a bumblebee, a dragonfly or a butterfly. Following the reading of the book, each child will have the opportunity to paint a rock and then enjoy chocolate cupcakes. The first twenty children at the program will be given a paperback copy of the book to take home and add to their home library.
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, is an annual event during which millions of individuals across the country help celebrate literacy in an effort to jumpstart a child’s future. The Minneola Schoolhouse Library is holding their October program in support of Jumpstart’s mission: to work toward the day that every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.
