Mobile Computing Lab Helps Learners Prepare for Future

The Lake County Library System’s Adult Literacy Program is pleased to announce that a grant from the Community Foundation of South Lake to the Friends of the Cagan Crossings Community Library has been a resounding success. The group received a technology grant from the Foundation that provided five laptops that were needed to develop a Mobile Computer Lab. The laptops were received in January and are used regularly to help South Lake County learners prepare for GED tests and to expand their digital literacy skills.

Sandra Lara, Literacy Coordinator for the Lake County Library System, stated that “many folks are so busy with their daily commitments that they have not had a chance to work in the digital world. Patrons who live in rural communities may not have ready access to broadband and the internet. This program has provided a service that has allowed our patrons to work with computers in the library at their own speed and provide basic skills needed for success with the GED and the workplace. The laptops have provided an enhanced environment for students who needed help with Digital Readiness skills as well and provided additional learning time to hone their academic skills”.

During the last six months this small program has provided over 120 hours of training to 41 participants. This training has included hands on training in laptop basics, using Windows 8 and Basic Internet Skills. The Library will expand this program to include programs at Cooper Memorial and Marion Baysinger Library in Groveland.

The Community Foundation of South Lake has also recently funded a project at the Marion Baysinger Library in Groveland to provide Apple I-Pads and other needed resources to teach patrons the basics of Mobile computing using an I-Pad. Topics will include I-Pad Basics, Finding Apps for Everyday Tasks. These programs will be available in November of 2013.
