Minneola Book Day

Wednesday, April 23 is Minneola Book Day. The Minneola Schoolhouse Library, aided by the Friends of the Library and many volunteers, sponsors this celebration of reading by giving books away to chosen groups. This year we are expanding to three locations.

At the library at 1:30 p.m. we will be celebrating Minneola Book Day at our regularly scheduled story time. Our story reader, Barbara Kingsley, will read a Little Critter story. Everyone is invited to come in their favorite pair of overalls and each child will have the opportunity to have little critter eyes thanks to the art of face painter Angela Michel. There will be plenty of Little Critter activities and a free Little Critter book for each child in attendance.

At Minneola Elementary at 2:30 p.m. we will deliver book bags to those children attending the after-school program. In addition to having a book for each child, the bags will contain pencils, bookmarks and other goodies.  At Grassy Lake Elementary at 3:30 p.m. another team of volunteers will deliver identical bags to those in attendance at that after-school program.

Minneola Book Day is a result of long tradition making its way to Minneola. The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Spain as a way to honor the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. Soon books and often a rose were exchanged on that day in memory of Cervantes. In 1995 World Book Day became an international celebration. In 2013 The Minneola Schoolhouse Library introduced this celebration to Minneola, Florida.
