In June, the W. T. Bland Public Library will host a three-part lecture series detailing the life and work of famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. During the presentations which will be offered on consecutive Tuesdays – June 3, June 10, and June 17 at 7:00pm, local expert Timothy Totten will use photos and stories to weave a fascinating portrait of the iconic artist.
• Tuesday, June 3 at 7:00pm – The Prairie Years – details Wright’s Wisconsin upbringing and entry into turn of-the-century architecture in a rebuilding Chicago.
• Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00pm – The Wandering Architect – follows Wright on his mid-life journey to Europe, the Mid-West, Japan and the American West, finding tragedy and scandal on the way to redemption
• Tuesday, June 17 at 7:00pm – The Modern Reinvention – highlights the busiest and most artistically fulfilling chapter of Wright’s career and personal life
Each lecture utilizes hundreds of photos and a dash of humor to give historical context and to show his impact on architecture today. While the series features a thorough discussion of Wright’s architectural achievements, the presentation style is designed for everyone, as local businessman, Kevin Robson can attest.
“I was not a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright or even architecture in general, but friends asked us to attend the Night with Frank Lloyd Wright”, says Robson, who owns a website hosting company in Lake County. “What we experienced was something right out of Shakespeare: intrigue, romance, murder. I even learned a little bit about architecture during this spellbind presentation.”
For Totten, who has studied the famous architect for almost 25 years and visited nearly 100 Wright-designed sites around the United States, the presentations are a chance to share his passion with the community. “Great architects can impart emotions with their buildings,” says Totten. “If I can communicate that feeling to you and maybe get you to laugh or even cry as I tell you the stories, I’ve done my job.”
While admission to the lecture series is free, advance reservations are strongly suggested. Please register by calling the Library at (352)735-7180 Ext 5 or stopping by the Circulation Desk or visit www.nightwithwright.com to reserve your seats. Space is limited.
