Lake County Library System and the W. T. Bland Public Library welcome special guest and Pulitzer Prize nominee Vivian Shipley to celebrate National Poetry Month. Vivian is a two-time recipient of the Paterson Award for Sustained Literary Achievement, the Library of Congress’s Connecticut Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to the Literary Community, the Connecticut Book Award for Poetry, Lucille Medwick Prize from the Poetry Society of America, as well as numerous other awards.
Ms. Shipley will be presenting The Spiritual Quest of Writing Poetry, on Thursday, April 3 in the W. T. Bland Public Library at 10 a.m. “Writing poems is a trip I start each day to find meaning for my individual life. The spiritual quest is universal unlike the physical one of the body which is personal.” This is a free event sponsored by the Lake County Library System's Authors’@ the Library.
Friday, April 4 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. A Poetry Reading hosted by Ms. Shipley and members of Writers One Flight Up (WOFU) will be held in the W. T. Bland Public Library. The 2014 WOFU Poetry contest winners will share their poems with the public.
The public is invited to join Ms. Shipley at a reception at One Flight Up Café in Mt. Dora between 5 and 7 p.m., Friday, April 4. Guitarist Shane Billette will perform during the reception, and drinks and appetizers will be available from One Flight Up Café at happy hour prices.
Continue your celebration of National Poetry Month at Poetry Under the Oaks on Saturday, April 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind the library. Enjoy the beauty of nature and the artistry of poets from Central Florida and beyond. Bring your lunch. Read a poem. Hear others read "What oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd."
If you would like to read a poem, you may sign up to read either in person at the W. T. Bland Public Library or by calling 735-7180 option 5. In case of rain or threatening weather, the poetry reading will take place in the Library’s Community Room.
