Local organizations support Adult Literacy

Erika L. Greene

The Lake County Library System (LCLS) Adult Literacy Program is proud to partner with the South Lake Junior Woman’s Club, Morrison United Methodist Church, GFWC Central Florida Woman's Club, State Farm Companies Foundation, Friends of the Tavares Library, Altrussa International of Lake County, and individuals in the community. Through their generous support in 2011 we have purchased workbooks, dictionaries, teacher materials, and other resources for tutors and adult learners in Pre-GED Math and Language Arts classes and one to one tutoring.

The Pre-GED program focuses on providing basic math, reading, and writing skills to adult learners who are struggling to successfully transition to a GED, other certification program, or prepare for the ASVAB military entrance exam. We know that we will not make them masters of each literacy skill but we will help them build their confidence, improve their study skills, and feel more prepared to begin to learn the more advanced skills they will need! Since August 2010, 134 adults have been assessed for the Pre-GED Language Arts & Math classes and over 100 have participated in 20 Pre-GED classes.

Support from community groups and individuals make it possible for us to continue to assist adults achieve their educational and personal goals. We truly appreciate their generosity.
