For the Love of Books

Lake County Library System staff works year round through our Adult and Family Literacy programs, art and cultural programs and programs for babies, toddlers, children and young adults to promote the love of reading. In the spring of the year we celebrate the book with an annual event that offers the opportunity to bring in authors that inspire and encourage that love. In 2009 the Festival of Reading will feature special programs with a Fantastic Florida theme at libraries from March 25th through March 28th, 2009. This year we have selected several award winning authors that reflect the history, environment and leisure life in Florida.

These events are a great opportunity to meet an author, hear them read from their work, or purchase an autographed copy of their latest book. Questions and signings follow these author presentations to allow personal interaction. Please join us for interesting, entertaining, intellectually stimulating or informative experiences.

In 2009 we are adding new Festival of Reading Events which will include an Author Reception at the W.T. Bland Public Library in Mount Dora. This special event to celebrate the accomplishments of Florida’s outstanding authors is presented free to the public. Join authors for a relaxed happy hour, with cash bar and hors d’ oeuvres provided by the American Culinary Federation, Gulf to Lakes Chefs and Cooks Association. Authors confirmed to date include Cynthia Barnett, James O. Born, Kristin Congdon, Vic DiGenti, Tim Dorsey, Mary Anna Evans, Bob Morris, Elaine Viets, and Stephen G. Craft. * Book-signing and sales will run concurrently.

Libraries are centers for those who learn, those who teach and those who create and they provide a place that encourages awareness, discovery and dialogue. This year for the Festival of Reading we will strive to educate, enlighten and enrich our community with two exhibits including The Art of the Book at the Lake County Historical Museum with Janeen Mason, who has received the U.S. Maritime Literature Award and a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award and 24 Women of Lake County, a juried show at the W.T. Bland Public Library.

A schedule of events is available online and at the libraries. You may also sign up to receive our Newsletter or Events Notice. Check our website: and click on the LCLS Libraries link for directions and library contact information or call 352-253-6153 for assistance.

We are honored to present contemporary authors and artists in the intimate setting of our libraries. The programs are almost always free and are open to the public. The costs are often covered by the Friends of the Library, support from the publishers, authors and artists, community donations, grants and other sources of funding. The value of the events is inestimable. Tickets are sometimes required for events. There is a nominal charge for an event such as a brunch or dinner to defray the cost of food. Tickets for those events are available through the hosting library.
